On April 2, 2025, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey signed the Alabama Public Employees Paid Parental Leave Act of 2025 allowing paid parental leave for eligible public employees. The law will go into effect on July 1, 2025 and will provide paid parental leave for eligible public employees, including teachers and state workers. Among other protections the law provides:
Eight weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, stillbirth or miscarriage of a child.
Two weeks of paid parental leave under those same circumstances for eligible male employees
In the case of adopted children three years or younger, eight weeks for one parent and two weeks for the other (at the choice of the parents) if both parents are eligible employees.
To be allowed the parental leave under the Act, the eligible employee must return to work for at least eight weeks after taking the leave, except under certain defined circumstances.
This Act will provide much needed time for a parent to bond with a biological or adopted child and helps promote health families.
